Court Phishing Scams

Thursday, November 7, 2024

Attorneys across the country have reported receiving fake electronic filing notifications by email. These notifications may or may not contain a case number or other case-related information. Recipients are prompted to respond immediately to an attachment or a link that contains malware. To avoid becoming a victim, do not open attachments or click on links from questionable sources. If you receive a suspicious email, please contact the clerk's office for the U.S. District Court by calling (866) 241-7123. Court staff will determine if the email is genuine.

In another version of this scam, people have reported receiving emails, telephone calls, and text messages from a person claiming to be a court employee or a law enforcement officer. Often, the sender threatens arrest, demands payment, or attempts to trick the recipient into visiting a malicious website or opening malware. If you receive an email, a telephone call, a link, or an attachment from someone claiming to be a court employee, and if you suspect that the communication is fraudulent, contact the U.S. District Court. Court staff will never ask for your personal financial information to verify your identity.
