Admission and ECF Registration

Any lawyer licensed to practice before the highest court of any state or the District of Columbia is eligible for admission to practice in the Western District of Wisconsin.

The admission process is completed by submitting an electronic application for admission and paying the prescribed fee of $176.  Counsel will receive an e-mail during the application process that contains a link to pay.gov, the payment website.  The clerk's office will independently confirm your standing with your state supreme court.  There is no need to mail a certificate of good standing to this court.

A certificate of admission will be mailed to you once your application has been approved.  Applicants can check their admission status by logging back into the admission system.  Once your application has been approved, your admission to practice in the Western District of Wisconsin is permanent.

Changing Your Contact Information

To change your name, firm affiliation, address or telephone number, please update your information with your state bar first, then send this court an e-mail indicating the bar to which you belong and containing both your new and old contact information.  Changes will apply to all open cases in which you have appeared, including cases that are on appeal, unless you request otherwise.

E-mail should be sent to ecfregistration@wiwd.uscourts.gov.

Please Note: If you change law firms, you should change your primary e-mail address before you depart to one that you can access after you depart.  This is necessary to reset your password and perform any future maintenance on your account in CM/ECF, including the addition of secondary e-mail addresses at your new firm.

Maintaining Your E-Mail

An attorney may add or change an e-mail address, or add secondary recipients, by logging into CM/ECF and selecting Utilities > My Account > Maintain Your E-mail.

Use of Attorney Rooms During Trial

The court cannot guarantee that an attorney room will be available, nor can the court provide a separate space for counsel to eat lunch.  To assure fairness, rooms will be randomly assigned the Wednesday before trial is scheduled to begin.  Counsel may request a room by calling (608) 261-5731. If one party requests a room, the clerk's office will assign a room to each party in the case.  Please read the court's policy on attorney rooms here.
